Keeping the Sabbath

Keeping the Sabbath

Rev. Kevin R Airrington
October 22, 2010

The 4th commandment tells us to keep the Sabbath Holy.  All through scripture we see this command.  Many Christians who love God, sort of hang their hat on this commandment.  And, there is nothing wrong with this, in fact, God bless them.  Jesus said if we love Him we would keep His commandments.  Although, He probably was not just speaking about the 10 commandments found in Exodus.   (John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”)  Christians that try and truly “keep the Sabbath” as we understand it, are really saying, “I LOVE YOU JESUS.”  Who can argue with that?

No Sabbath Day holder would ever disagree with the following statement, “The primary purpose of the Sabbath is for us to rest from our worldly labors and to seek God.”  As an avid student of the Creation account and the Bible in general, I can assure that God was not tired after is creation work was complete.   *God set aside a special time for His people.  We will discuss the last sentence in more depth later.  God blessed the Sabbath and sanctified it or set it aside for a holy purpose.  We are commanded to set aside time for a holy purpose.

In this essay, I would like to discuss why I chose to not go to church on Saturday and I do not honor some of the traditions surrounding the Sabbath.

  • *The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
    1. Mark 2:23-28 “… The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
    2. Isaiah 58:13-14 The Sabbath was intended to be a delight, not a burden. The focus of the Sabbath should be on what we can do and not what we cannot do. (More on this later)  The Sabbath is a time we put down our own desires and spend time with God.
  • When is the Sabbath?
    1. Leviticus 23:32, “It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.” This scripture is clear that on the 9th day of the month from evening to evening we should celebrate our Sabbath.   Is this every Saturday?  According to this passage it may not even be on Saturday to begin with.
    2. Saturday in Hebrew is Shabbat, which means rest.
      1. Except for the Sabbath day, the individual days of the week have no names, just numbers.
    3. When God created the heaven and the earth, there were no calendars. Thus, no way to tell us when the first day of the week was.  Perhaps He may have begun on a Wednesday and ended the following Monday.
    4. It is only from our tradition that we assume that God started His creation process on Sunday and ended on Friday.
    5. Rabbi Yose ben Halafta (Died in 160AD) changed the Jewish calendar. So even the Jewish calendar cannot be relied upon.
    6. Exodus 20:8-11 “remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy.” “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

I THINK IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE DO NOT LET THE “DAY” BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE “INTENT”.  Don’t let the “day” become more important than the “intent”.

From Scripture there is no way we can tell when the Sabbath was.   Even from outside evidence all we know is in the Hebrew it means “rest” not specifically what day of the week it is.    We cannot simply compare it to our weekly calendar and say, “well, we are not complying”.

  • In today’s modern society it is impossible to keep the Sabbath.
    1. I am sure that, “Sabbath Holders have run into this before and have their answer. Which is fine, but I cannot get away from what the scripture says.
    2. Exodus 20:10, “But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:”
      1. If you use lights, gas, eat food or do anything that causes anyone else to work then you are not keeping the Sabbath.
      2. If your dog fetches your paper or your slippers you are not keeping the Sabbath.
  • There are other activities that the Bible tells us to refrain from in order to keep the Sabbath.
  • Going to Church…Worship on the Sabbath.
    1. Luke 4:16 is an example and Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves.
    2. We should go to church on the Sabbath and we need fellowship, uniting in worship and prayer.
    3. Today, it takes electricity to run the lights…causing people at the light company to work. If we flush the toilet then we cause the person at the water company to work.
  • What did Jesus do with the Sabbath day?
    1. While nowhere in scripture can we find an example of Jesus preaching on the 4th commandment, given He preached on the other 9, we do find examples example as in Luke 4:16 where Jesus entered into the Tabernacle on the Sabbath.
      1. This is different that “Keeping the Sabbath”. He did go to “Church”, showing us as in number 4 above that we need to be in church on the Sabbath.  Nothing more could or should be read into this.
      2. JESUS PREACHED ON ALL 10 OF THE 10 COMMANDMENTS EXCEPT THE 4TH COMMANDMENT, THERE IS NO PREACHING ON THE SABBATH BY JESUS.
        1. Jesus was clear in His teaching of the Sabbath, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath!”  He also proclaimed that HE WAS LORD OF THE SABBATH.  Matthew 12:8, Mark 2:28, Luke 6:5
        2. Isn’t someone who created something the owner of it?  Can’t they do whatsoever they please with it?  In this way, Jesus, being the Creator (John 1:3; Colossians 1:6), has every right to do whatever He pleases on the Sabbath, just as anyone of the disciples had when they were with Him.  That’s why Jesus said that He was Lord of the Sabbath.  The word Lord denotes sovereign rights and ownership so who can tell Jesus what He can and what He cannot do on the Sabbath?  Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of the day because they were making the Sabbath something that no one could possibly
    2. Matthew 12:5-6, “Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?…” Jesus was saying that even though the priests violated the Sabbath it was okay because there was something more important than the Sabbath.  The temple and the sacrificial rites were more important.
      1. Jesus, however, is more important than the temple and its sacrifices. The logical conclusion is that he is also more important than the Sabbath. Even before his death and resurrection, he was more important than the Sabbath.
      2. Although Christianity tends to reject the temple and the rites…the principle is still the same…”Some things are more important than the Sabbath.
  • The Pharisees needed to worry more about Jesus (The Holy One) instead of a holy activity on a holy day.
  1. Jesus then summarized his argument about the Sabbath and about his own identity: “If you had known what these words mean, `I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath” (verses 7-8).
  2. Jesus is telling the Pharisees that love for humans is more important than sticking to worship rituals.
  3. The Sabbath was holy only because God had designated it so, and here was God himself telling them He was Lord of the Sabbath.
  • Then they tried to set Jesus up in (V9-11). Healing on the Sabbath was work that was for forbidden.  Jesus replied, “If your sheep fell in a hole would you not get him out?”  Meaning, sometimes we have to do things even if on the Sabbath.  If your child drank a bottle of bleach…would you take him to the emergency room on the Sabbath?
  • There are other examples of Jesus healing on the Sabbath in the Gospels.
    1. John 5:1-18 — The Gospel of John has some additional stories about Jesus’ Sabbath activities, and they reinforce the emphases we have already seen. On the Sabbath, Jesus healed a man who had been an invalid for 38 years. And he told the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk” (verse 8). The Jews accused the man of breaking the Sabbath because he was carrying his mat.
      1. I think accusing a man of breaking the Sabbath by carrying his mat his mat is an example from God’s Word of how we can get carried away with (no pun intended) our keeping of the Sabbath.
    2. Jesus risked His life by His activities on the Sabbath.
      1. Jesus never broke the Sabbath, nor did he teach others to break the Sabbath. But neither did he teach against circumcision and sacrifices. He could point out administrative problems, and present himself as the Lord, but it was not yet time to publicly reject any particular law (see John 16:12-13). But the implications are there.  When John describes Jesus as working on the Sabbath, he does not feel compelled to explain that Christians cannot. When Luke says that people are freed on the Sabbath, he does not feel compelled to qualify what he said. Jesus’ example regarding the Sabbath is liberty, not rules.
      2. If Sabbath work actually dishonored God, then the Sabbath would have priority over humans in need and sheep in pits, since correct worship of God is more important than human lives and sheep. If absolute rest were essential to worship, then Sabbath-keepers should let houses burn down, since that would only be a monetary loss, and God’s honor is far more important than our material goods. This indicates that the command to rest on a specific day is a ceremonial matter rather than a moral one. God’s spiritual law does not have any exceptions.

Summary

The only time Paul mentions the Sabbath by name is when he exhorts us not to judge one another concerning the Sabbath days (Colossians 2:16-17).  Respectfully, asking if I keep the Sabbath or I conform to the Sabbath is the wrong question.  I wonder how Jesus would have responded to that?  His answer may have got Him stoned.

The Sabbath was made for man and not the other way around is perhaps the most profound statement in this whole discussion.  God created the Sabbath for man…and God healed on the Sabbath and partook in other activities on the Sabbath.   Jesus’ example regarding the Sabbath is liberty, not rules.  What a blessing the Sabbath is.

There is also no way we can determine the exact day or days (sometimes it is plural) of the Sabbath.  There was no calendar when the Sabbath was created by God.  Even the scriptures seem unclear; calling it day, days and the 9th of the month.  My thinking is the “day” is not so important as is the “intent”.

The Bible says that we are not to cause others to work, not even strangers on the Sabbath.  There is no one…not one who can “keep the Sabbath”.  If this is all there is to the Sabbath.  There has to be more to the intent than a day or whether we do some work.

We see from the Apostles, the early church and Jesus (God) that the Sabbath is going to Church.  We also see in the same breath this is for fellowship, worship and prayer…not forsaking the assembling of one another.

Finally, we have Jesus’ own actions concerning the Sabbath.  Jesus did not (and this is not meant to be a mockery) hide in his house from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown.  He worked on the Sabbath and he went to Church on the Sabbath.  He even rebuked the Pharisees over the Sabbath telling them there were more important things like the Temple and people than the Sabbath.  Jesus is Lord over the Sabbath!

The Sabbath is very important to me as a Christian.  We need to just as the scriptures demand; keep the Sabbath Holy.   We need to set aside time for God.  Sundown to sundown…frankly, I don’t think this is enough.   The intent has got to be more important than the day.   I have joked with my Seventh-day Adventist friends saying, “I am a seven day Adventist” meaning, I try to keep every day holy.   However, I am like Paul; I am not judgmental on how anyone cho oses to honor the Sabbath.  If it is sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday…God bless them.  If they do this Wednesday…God bless them.  If it is Sunday morning in Church…God bless them.

I think we should be in worship and in church.  The point is we need to give God or time and that time needs to be holy and hollowed.  After all, He took the time to come down from Heaven, was beaten, tortured and murdered for us.  He deserves our worship; more worship than we can humanly give.   God wants more than our Saturdays.  He wants our Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays too!

Creation In The Stars

Creation In The Stars

Rev. Kevin R. Airrington
It amazes me that every single science discipline supports a Creator. What’s more is not only does every science discipline (including math) support creation, they also disprove evolution. And no, evolution is not a science; it’s not even a theory. 🙂 Evolution is a faith based religion, which takes more faith to believe in than the Christian faith I might add. 🙂 I am working on a series of books for kids. One of the books is called “On the 4th day God created the moon.” This is basically an astronomy book for grade school kids from the biblical perspective. Here is a snippet of that book for this discussion. Scientists estimate that there are a lot of stars in the universe.

There are about 70 sextillion stars out there. That’s 10 to the 21st power or 70 with 21 zeros after it.

It looks like this:  70,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Now that’s a lot of stars!  And that’s the ones we know about; we don’t know about the ones we don’t know about. 🙂 There are enough stars out there that we know about, that each person on earth could own 11 trillion stars. You can have 11 trillion of your own stars…yeah!  Have fun…go name ’em. 🙂 The evolutionists want us to believe that all 70 sextillion stars formed over 70 billion years.  That’s impossible!  Do the math with me real quick.

That is over 3.5 trillion stars forming in a year or 6.5 million stars forming every minute…EVERY MINUTE!!!  We don’t see that happening today…nor have we ever saw that happening.  In fact, we have never ever seen a star form.  Oh, sometimes they will say we have…and their evidence is a bright spot.  A bright spot!  🙂  They cannot tell if a dust cloud moved out of the way or a supernova took place (stars get brighter just before they explode).  Even if we have seen a star form…this is a long way off to 6.5 million stars forming in a minute.   You might say, “gee professor, maybe the universe just stopped making stars, did you ever think of that dummy?”  Uh, yes, I have.  So, the universe is popping stars out at the rate of 6.5 billion stars a minute and then for some reason it just stops?  Or at least kicks them out 1 every 10 years or something?  Will you look at what they want your kids to believe Martha?

I believe God…He created the moon, the sun and the stars on day four.  It took Him only one day and the stars were created and completely mature with the light reaching earth etc. Praise God! “Stars burnt out billions of years ago.”

“Stars burnt out billions of years ago, but the light is still just reaching us.”  You know, I can believe that they burnt out some time ago…not billions of years ago…but maybe some burnt out 100 years ago or 1000 years ago.  What’s cool is God…THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE, and no, not that wimp Zeus is capable if creating a star and sticking it in the sky and making the light reach the earth instantly.

Can I get a witness?  You sure can.  The Bible tells us that God created the angels, including the god of some of you, Satan (ouch) on day 2 of the creation week, how do you know that Kevin?  Don’t worry about it. Just kidding, read this: http://airrington.com/?p=1384.  It probably needs a rewrite…but you will get the point.  The angels were there to watch God do all of this.  “No, now you see there Kevin, now you are off your rocker, the angels have always lived with God, they are eternal just like Him.” Really?  To be honest I am not even sure if they are everlasting like us.

Why did God create angels?  Hebrews 7:14, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

He created angels to minister to us!  And, just in case you have never read Genesis, chapter one in the Bible…and I mean the BIBLE, God’s Word, The King James Authorised Version, I will give you a hint, down on day six, God created, man, cows, rabbits, tigers, bears, dinosaurs…you know all your basic land animals.  AND YES, DINOSAURS.  Oh and then He created woman…named her Eve, the mother of all living.

Until God created man, four days later, there was no need for angels.  And you want to know something else cool?  You and I are assigned our own personal guardian angels.  It’s true.  And about every 6 months God gives me two more and the angels pleas with God, “Have you seen him drive his wheelchair God, we can’t take it no more!”

Psalm 91:11, “ For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Cool huh?  And look, it’s 911!  I think when we get to Heaven we are going to be amazed at all the things that angels do.  For more about angels, see my book, AN ANGEL IN MY BATHTUB.

Psalm 19:1, The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

That’s Him!

That’s Him!

Matthew 11:1-6

In Matthew 11 we find John the Baptist at the lowest moment of his life. He is in Herod’s prison and he has been there for some time. In fact, things go from worse to bad…er…bad to worse or something like that.  After about 16 months of being in jail, John was beheaded. As he sits in that dungeon, Satan has time to introduce doubt into the mind of John concerning the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Isn’t that just like the devil?  COmes at us when we are at our worse.  John begins to question whether or not Jesus is really the Messiah.   You don’t hear too many preachers teaching about this side of John the Baptist…Of course, John had not always doubted! There was a time early in the ministry of our Lord that John was well acquainted with just Who Jesus was, John 1:29; John 3:30.

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

and

He must increase, but I must decrease

Now, there is a little question in His mind. So, John sends his disciples to ask Jesus if He is the messiah or not. Jesus responds by telling John’s disciples to go an tell John that Jesus is healing the sick, raising the dead and preaching the Gospel to sinners. In other words, Jesus is telling John, “I’m Him!

I want you to know that there are times when I can sympathize with John. Surely, we all entertain doubts every now and then. If it were possible, I would like to go to John this and have him take a little trip with me.  If I could, I would take John to some places and show him some things about Jesus. When I had done that I can almost hear John saying now, “That’s Him! That’s Him!“. Well, I can’t take John to those places, but you and I can go.  If you are willing, come with me, I want to take you on a little trip and show you some truths about Jesus that should leave us all saying, “That’s Him!

  1. THAT’S HIM IN CREATION

(Let’s go back To The Beginning)

Jesus quoted from Genesis probably more than any other book of the Bible.

  1. His Presence In Creation – (Genesis 1:1)
  2. His Power In Creation – (Colossians 1:16; John 1:10)
  3. His Purpose In Creation – (Genesis 1:26)
  4. That’s Him In Creation
  5. THAT’S HIM IN THE CRADLE

(Let’s go Back To BethlehemLuke 2:1-10)

  1. The Mystery Of His Birth – (John 1:1, 14; Philippians 2:5-8)
  2. The Ministry Of His Birth – (Matthew 1:21; Luke 19:10; Matthew 20:28)
  3. The Majesty Of His Birth – (Philippians 2:5-8)
  4. That’s Him In Creation
  5. That’s Him In The Manger

III. THAT’S HIM IN CONTROL

(Let’s travel to the worst moments in human history)

  1. He Controls Disaster – (John 6:15-21)
  2. He Controls Difficulties – (Ill. Bread – John 6:5-14; Fire – Daniel 3; Lions – Daniel 6)
  3. He Controls Disease – (Matthew 11:5; Luke 4:18 – Jesus healed the blind, the lame, the diseased, the crippled. No disease had the power to stand in the way of His power.)
  4. He Controls Death – (He raised Jairus’ daughter – Luke 8:41-56; He raised the widow’s son – Luke 7:11-16; He raised Lazarus – John 11:43-44) (Ill. He still holds the power over death – John 11:25-26; Revelation 1:18.)
  5. That’s Him In Creation
  6. That’s Him In The Manger

III. That’s Him In Control

  1. THAT’S HIM ON THE CROSS

(Let’s go to war)

  1. His Pain – (Ill. Isaiah 53:4-7; Ill. All He suffered for us!)
  2. His Payment – (I Peter 1:18-19; Revelation 5:9; Revelation 1:5)
  3. His Promise – (Romans 5:6-8; 1 John 2:2; Romabs 10:13; John 6:37)
  4. That’s Him In Creation
  5. That’s Him In The Manager

III. That’s Him In Control

  1. That’s Him On The Cross
  2. THAT’S HIM WEARING THE CROWN

(Ok…get back on the bus and let’s head over to the The Best Day)

  1. His Resurrection – (Matthew 28:1-6; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25)
  2. His Return – (John 14:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
  3. His Reign – (Hebrews 8:1; Hebrews 10:12; Revelation 19:16)

That’s Him!  We have traveled from Manger to Cross, to resurrection and now to glory.  Jesus is everything that the saint or the sinner needs. That’s Him!  Like John and like Thomas (we have not talked about him…but we all know who Thomas is)…we all have a doubt…but Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be.

Them Thomas thrust his hhand in Jesus’ side…and place his finger in His scared hand, he exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!”, John 20:28

Peter answering Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?”   … Peter says,  “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”  Matthew 16:16

Phillip said, “If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!” Acts  8:37

His enemies declared Him to be God…not a god, but GOD, “The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.John 10:33

Isaiah (Old testament Prophet), “ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.“, Isaiah 9:6

King David claimed Jesus is Lord, “He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,” Matthew 22:43

The Apostle Paul, “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:Colossians 1:15

Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” John 8:58

Why is this important?  Because God gave Himself the same title when speaking to Moses, “I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.Exodus 3:14

Jesus, and perhaps the most compelling, said, “ I and my Father are one.John 10:30

1 John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

John 1:1, 1:14,  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.“, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

THAT’S HIM!

If you are not saved, let me just point out this fact: That’s Him! If you are saved, but need God’s help in your life today, let me remind you: That’s Him!  Whatever you need, wherever you are in your walk of life, all you need to know today is this: That’s Him!

It all comes down to this: If you need as Savior, That’s Him. If you need a friend, that’s Him. If you have a need that must be met: that’s Him. If you need forgiveness, that’s Him. If you want to miss Hell and go to Heaven, that’s Him. Whatever you need: that’s Him!

Jesus is the Living God!  That’s Him and He has the power to save to the uttermost!  (Hebrews 7:25) That’s Him!

Final Conclusion: Who did God the Father say Jesus was? “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” Hebrews 1:8 THAT’S HIM!

Answering My Critics – Halloween 2

Answering My Critics – Halloween 2

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Thank you Patty Cake for sharing my article.   I also appreciate all the comments, both on Patty Cake’s page, my wall and personal emails and calls.   When I was asked to address some of the comments…I never thought I would be writing a Part II Follow-up to my Halloween essay.   But this is exactly what has happened.

Charles Darwin
The Origin Of Species
by Means of Natural Selection
The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life

There are few things that stir up controversy in the Bible than that of the ongoing debate on whether Christians should participate in Halloween.   Offhand I can think of only two other topics that stir the soul like Halloween…the question of origins (4.7 Billion Years or a mere 6,000.  The Big Bang…evolution or God did it over 6 days?  Dinosaurs went extinct 65 Million Years ago or they have always lived with man?  Were there dinosaurs on the ark?  Are there living dinosaurs today?) And Drinking (Is it permissible for a Christian to drink?  How about get drunk?  Does the Bible ever allow room for drinking?  What does the Bible say about social drinking and Bars & Taverns?  How do we reconcile Romans 14:21 and 1 Thessalonians 5:22)?

Many of you have asked these same questions.  Some of you “KNOW” the answer.  Not necessarily because you have read your Bible or researched for yourself…but because someone told you.   Perhaps a Pastor told you.  Someone you trust.   Remember, someone you trust can also be someone who is wrong.

How do you handle it when someone you trust gets it wrong?  First, they usually are not wrong about everything…if they are…I would find a new source.  Second, no one is right about everything…except me of course.  🙂

No matter how you feel about these three controversial subjects…they are your world view.  Your world view is affected by many things.  Rarely is it affected by our own personal prayer and research.

My goal when I wrote this article on Halloween was to provide a RESOURCE for those CHRISTIAN FAMILES looking for ANSWERS about HALLOWEEN and are STRUGGLING with the DECISION of whether or not it is right for their family.

I have read your comments and I appreciate all of you that have decided to weigh in and give your thoughts.    I think it is especially important for Christians to continue in open dialogue and discussion.  I do however want to address a couple of your comments.  Not to change your mind…because I am not good at that anyway.  J  But, rather try and get you to think about it a little bit.  Then with this information you can decide if Halloween is still right for you and your family.

Susan Pushmann, what bigger fish could we be frying than Christian’s addressing the very nature and source of evil in this world?  Halloween is a day that hell is opened up and demons walk among us.  Not in costumes —those are our children…but if you read my article or do the research on your own this is exactly what they are doing.  The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 to avoid the APPEARANCE of evil.  Not just evil as that is obvious…but the appearance.  Halloween is more than “fun”…it is a satanic event plain and simple.  Now, your children may not participate in these rituals…but these rituals go on even today.  Satan is alive and well on Planet Earth…and he chooses Halloween as a very special day for him and his followers.   Halloween is the #2 holiday for Wiccans and the number one holiday for Satanists.  That’s not me saying that or some statistic…go ask them…as Christians we hold the birth and resurrection dear…they hold The Festival of the dead dear.

Anne Pushmann LeClair…you are right…MOST Christians are fine with Halloween.  Churches celebrate the event like good Irish Druids.    Sadly, this world is far from God and the church is asleep.  I studied the history of the Church in America.  It was not long ago that you would be kicked of church if you were known to be the town drunk…you would even be kicked out for swearing.  Today, I think we would have some pretty empty churches.  J  In today’s modern church we allow adulterers, wife beaters and homosexuals in our churches.   Now I just picked 3 because they seemed extreme to me when compared to drinking and swearing…I think sin is sin…

You said, “…don’t make everything out to be evil. These same Christians feel the bible is the ultimate authority.”  You are partly right here.  “These same Christians feel the Bible is the ultimate authority.”  The problem is this same group…while they believe this and they allow their lives to show it…they don’t read their Bible so they have no idea what it says.

I believe that there is much evil in the world…Halloween being one of them.  Why do I believe this?  Because God said it and I believe Him.   Here are a few examples:

Romans 12:2, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

Matthew 24:9-13, “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.  10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.  11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.  13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

Ephesians 6:10-18 “10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand…” (You can read the rest)

1 John 4:8, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

Romans 5:6 talks about the free gift of salvation brought about because of our many trespasses [Evil].

Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned [committed evil] and come short of the glory of God.”

1 John 5:19, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”

The Bible says we live in the world but we are not of this world…it demands that even though we live in this world we should be separate from the [evil] things of this world.

2 Corinthians 6:17, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”

God says if we love the world or the things in this world [having fun with a Halloween] then we do not belong to him.

1 John 2:15, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

God goes on to say that if we are a friend of the world we are in enmity with him (enmity is a very strong word for enemy).  He likens us to be adulteresses.  In other words, we are cheating on God by getting in bed with the world and in this case Halloween.

James 4:4, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

It has always be interesting to me how people will take one scripture and attempt to support their whole doctrine with it.   The Bible has to be study as the whole…what is the message of God in the Bible concerning evil and Halloween?

I believe God is crystal clear…we are to have no part in it and if we do we are an enemy of his.  AN ENEMY OF GOD’s!!!!  Maybe that don’t mean anything to some…but to me…in no way shape or form do I want to be His enemy!

Since you used it as your analogy…lets discuss for a moment, “eating meat offered to idols”. Great job…most people have never even heard of this…a but let’s look at it a little closer to see if your analogy fits:

I don’t know if you were aware but this comes from the book of Leviticus chapter 17-18.  When the Jerusalem council met regarding what to require from the new Gentile believers, they basically summarized the requirements from Leviticus 17–18.  Leviticus 17 deals with the sanctity of blood and idolatry (offerings to demons) while Leviticus 18 focuses on forms of sexual immorality.

I don’t want to take this too far of the beaten path so we will look at primarily at chapter 17.    Leviticus 17:1-7 basically teaches that all clean animals must be brought as korbanot (offerings) and must be offered in the Sanctuary.     If anyone killed a clean animal and didn’t offer it to the Lord, he was guilty of bloodshed.  Sacrifices could not be made in the open fields or somewhere in the camp other than the Sanctuary.  These sacrifices were offered to goat-demons.  Since the Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D., no sacrifices to the Lord have been made because of this commandment.

Deuteronomy 12:13-16 re-emphasizes this commandment but gives permission to slaughter and eat clean meat in a manner similar to gazelle or deer whereas previously, the Israelites had to offer peace offerings when they wanted to eat meat.  From this point on, no matter where the Israelites lived they were permitted to eat meat whenever they wanted as long as they didn’t eat the blood.

You may be surprised to know that as Jews became believers in Jesus Christ, they still offered sacrifices at the Temple and made pilgrimages to Jerusalem for the feasts until it was destroyed in 70 A.D.  This was long after Christ’s death and resurrection.

Paul said some people had the knowledge that idols did not have any real existence in the world nor could they affect the meat which was sacrificed to them while others believed differently.   Paul suggested that believers should not eat meat sacrificed to idols so they won’t cause someone else with a weak conscience to stumble; however, this was not the primary reason to avoid meat sacrificed to idols.

Many Christians believe that believers are free to knowingly eat food sacrificed to idols when someone weaker in their faith is not around.  This could not be further from the truth.  Paul finally gives a better reason to avoid meat sacrificed to idols in 1 Corinthians 10.  In this chapter, Paul equates eating food sacrificed to idols to having fellowship with demons.  Clearly, we are not to eat at the table of demons.

If you don’t know whether or not your meat was offered to idols (demons), don’t ask.  Just eat it with thanksgiving to God.  If you hear your meat was offered to idols, don’t eat it.  Whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:27-31).

So Anne, I do see where you are going with this…but I think the problem is your complete understanding of the account.  A careful reading as we have done here of Leviticus 17 and supporting scripture (Deuteronomy 12:13-1 and 1 Cor. 10:27-31Acts 21) that your interpretation is a little misguided.  But don’t fret at least you are aware of the passage…meaning you have read your Bible.  Very good.

I think the physician Luke sums this whole thing best, Acts 21:25, “As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.”  To get a complete understanding read the entire 21st chapter.

Indeed, the Master has spoken…His Authority is true.  Leviticus does not give tolerance to the celebration of Halloween…in fact just the opposite.

Most of this was from an article I posted a couple years ago.  God is the same yesterday, today and forever.  Read the entire article at: http://airrington.com/?p=1799

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Please email me any questions or comments you have about this or any other Biblical or question about any essay on this site.   If you wish for your quest

This essay is a resource for Christian families who are looking for answers about Halloween. But I know before I even publish this that I will take heat for even bringing up the subject of Christians celebrating Halloween.  Let me say up front that my goal is to lift up Jesus in everything I say and do.  I stand for truth. I stand for Jesus, and I am not ashamed.

INTRODUCTION

Image result for jackolanternsSeveral years ago I reposted two very good articles about Halloween on my Ministry Website: www.airrington.com. Go to my site and search for Halloween. I did not write these articles, but I thought they answered some questions about Halloween.  They are very good articles but what I should have done is take the time to write my own article and inject my personal beliefs, detailed history and what the Bible has to say on the matter.

Should you and I as Christians be involved in the celebration of Halloween?

Finding the answer to that question has been an interesting journey in itself.   I have my own reasons and Biblical reasons  to say the least of these — Joshua 24:2, 15, And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel…choose you this day whom ye will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.  This in it of itself should be enough.  The sad thing is, God is clear in His Word about a good many things…yet it seems that many tend to ignore them.  They tend to make God in his or her own image instead of the way around.  Many will not read this article because it is too long and we just can’t be bothered, besides I just don’t believe that stuff is our excuse.  “My pastor says Halloween is okay to celebrate.”  Your Pastor is just a man and he is wrong about this!  That’s a pretty bold statement, I agree, but perhaps after you read this essay you will change your mind.  I hope you do…for the love of God, and if Christ’s death means any to you…I hope you do!

As I searched the Internet to get opinions, thinking I would find many God fearing Churches shout, “CHRISTIANS DO NOT CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN”…what I found instead of God’s saints defending the Gospel of Truth was churches glorifying Halloween as some sort of Christian Holiday; perhaps as important or more important than Christmas or Easter.  Shocking! First I found a site that said, “10 Reasons why Christians should NOT celebrate Halloween.”  Then the very next one in the search was, “7 reasons why Christians SHOULD celebrates Halloween.”  Ay ya yay!  No wonder Christians are confused about almost every subject.  One site said, “We should not worry about spirits, ghosts, and satanic symbolism with Halloween we should worry about drunk drivers and other social issues.”  Are you serious?  Yes, those things are important…again, may I… ay ya yay!  The Bible I read and perhaps yours is different than mine says,For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”  Ephesians 6:12

HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

Is there anything Godly about this?

I have heard a lot of ‘TALK’ about Halloween being a Christian Holiday…just look at the thousands of people on Facebook, Youth Pastors and Pastors alike all justifying this holiday as some sort of I don’t know what…some sort of Christian All Saint’s Day.

Let’s see about all this Christian Holiday business.

The name “Halloween” comes from the All Saints Day celebration of the early “Christian” church, a day set aside for remembrance of the martyrs.   The word Halloween comes from the term “All Hallows Eve” which occurred on October 31st, at the end of the summer in Northwestern Europe.  “All Saints Day,” Or “All Hallows Day” was the next day, November 1st.  Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day.   “All Hallows Eve” was eventually contracted to “Hallow-e’en,” which became “Halloween.”

As near as I could find out; the earliest origins of Halloween can be traced back to about the time of Jesus Christ.  These origins were primarily from an ancient Ireland and Scotland.  On October 31st, the Celtics celebrated the end of summer.  During this important time of the year for herders they would move their animals into barns and pens in order to prepare for and ride out the long winter months ahead.   Also, this was the time that the farmers harvested their crops.   This annual changing of the seasons and the “lifestyle” was celebrated by a festival called Samhain – pronounced ‘sow-ane’.   Few Christians have heard this term.  Samhain is still celebrated today as an ancient pagan festival of the dead by witches all over the world.  In some of the earliest Irish literature sources you will find mentioning’s of Samhain.  Many important events surround Samhain…they either take place on Samhain or around this time period.

Samhain is one of four Gaelic seasonal festivals: Imbolc, Beltane and Lughnasadh make up the other three.  Samhain along with Beltane, bonfires were lit and rituals began.   These bonfires as well as the ashes are said to have protective and cleansing powers.  And that’s not all.  They also performed many rituals that involved the bonfires.  Samhain, like Beltane is seen as a time when spirits could easily make entrance into our world.  The aos sí – pronounced ‘ees shee’ and the older form aes sídhe – pronounced ‘ays sheeth-uh’, it is usually spelled Sìth but you would pronounce it the same.  (Star Wars – Remember the Sìth – Star Wars is the most occultic movie of all time.)…is a supernatural race that some believe is the remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits.  They are said to be ancestors, the spirits of nature or gods & goddesses and they walk among the living.

They also believe that the aos sí needed to be propitiated or appeased in order to ensure that their livestock survived the winter.  So, if you make the deity happy they will protect your livestock.  The souls of the dead were welcomed into their homes and the dead kin would also have a place of honor set for them at the table for them.  “Guising” is part of the festival.  This involved people going door to door in a disguise and reciting verses in exchange for food or coins.  (trick or treat).  Costumes were used to disguise themselves from the aos sí (the spirits).

Divination, which involved nuts and apples were a big part of the festival.  Divination is a systematic method by which the individual attempts to gain an answer to a question or a situation in their lives by way of an occultic process or ritual.   They may gain this knowledge through reading signs, events or through contact with a supernatural agency.

The Roman Catholic Church changed the dates of All Saints Day from 1 November to 2 November (they are good at changing dates— look at Christmas.  The Jews also monkey with dates…changing the Jewish calendar so that Jesus would not line up as the Messiah but a favorite Rabbi would, see my article called, “THE JEWISH CALENDAR”) and it later became ‘All Soul’s Day’.  Overtime Samhain and All Saints’/All Souls’ Day merged to help create what we now celebrate as Halloween.   Towards the end of the 20th century, Celtic neopagens and Wiccans have observed Samhain or something very similar based on it.  Make no mistake this IS a RELIGEOUS HOLIDAY but NOT a CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY.    Samhain is celebrated all over the world…and at different times of the year.  The name may change as well, but it is the same RELIGEOUS HOLIDAY.

Samhain, like Beltane was a time when the doorway to the underworld was opened to the this world.  This allowed the SPIRITS OF THE DEAD to come into our world.  The way I read this Samhain is basically a FESTIVAL FOR THE DEAD.  The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn says that the sidhe (fairy mounds or portals to the Otherworld) “were always open at Samhain”.

“According to the Dindsenchas and Annals of the Four Masters, which were written by Christian monks, Samhain in ancient Ireland was associated with the god Crom Cruach. The texts claim that King Tigernmas (Tighearnmhas) made offerings to Crom Cruach each Samhain, sacrificing a first-born child by smashing their head against a stone idol of the god.”  THAT’S WICKED…hey lets go trick or treating!

How can this glorify God?

Ronald Hutton ((1996) Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain. Oxford, Oxford University Press ISBN 0-19-288045-4) he writes: “When imitating malignant (it will destroy you as opposed to benign which is just a pain) spirits it was a very short step from guising to playing pranks”.   In other words, imitating evil spirits is about the same thing as dressing up in costumes and going door to door or playing pranks.   Playing pranks at Samhain is recorded in the Scottish Highlands as far back as 1736 and was also common in Ireland, which led to Samhain being nicknamed “Mischief Night” in some parts.  I think Mischief Night could accurately describe todays modern Halloween.   Many teenagers and young adults…play all kinds of pranks…toilet papering a tree…throwing eggs at a house…putting dog poop in a paper bag and setting it on fire so the unsuspecting victim stomps it out on their porch gets poop in their slippers and more.

Harvest Party at Church. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE!

Trick-or-Treating came from the custom of going door-to-door collecting food, coins and fuel for bonfires and/or offerings to the aos sí for the Samhain festival.  Trick-or-Treating also has roots in collecting ‘Soul Cakes.’  This is an English practice where given out to Soulers (mostly children and the poor) who would go door-to-door on Halloween singing and saying prayers for the dead (Idolatry, more on this later).   These small round cakes were eaten and they would represent a soul being freed from purgatory.  Traditionally the Soul Cakes with glasses of wine were set out on All Hallows’ Eve as an offering for the dead.  This ritual of children going door –to-door begging for Soul Cakes on All Saints Day was known as ‘SOULING’.

In 1891, the Reverend M.P. Holmes from Tattenhall, Chesire discovered the song from a little girl at the local school (Gregory, E. David (2010). The Late Victorian Folklore Revival. Scarecrow Press. p. 315. ISBN 978-0-8108-6988-2.).    In the 1950s the soul-cake song was still being collected in England.

The 1891 song contained the following lyrics:

A soul! a soul! a soul-cake!
Please good Missis, a soul-cake!
An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry.
One for Peter, two for Paul
Three for Him who made us all.

In 1963, Peter, Paul and Mary, an American Folk Group recorded their version of the song and entitled it: ‘A Soalin’:

Soul, soul, a soul cake!
I pray thee, good missus, a soul cake!
One for Peter, two for Paul,
Three for Him what made us all!
Soul cake, soul cake, please good missus, a soul cake.
An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry.
One for Peter, two for Paul, and three for Him who made us all.

American Hallowe’en composer Kristen Lawrence found two historical tunes associated with soul cakes, she was struck that the beginning notes were the same as the mediaeval plainchant Dies Irae, “Day of Judgment.”  The lyrics call for the people to repent and pray for the dead (Idolatry, more on this later). (British rock musician Sting recorded a song called “Soul Cake”.  You can listen to the song on his 2009 album, “If on a Winter’s Night”.   What am I saying; this is the 21st Century, head over to You Tube!  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu8H5rA9HuA).  It’s a snappy little tune with a nice beat…and my head was surely a bobbin’, however, the chorus will send chills down your spine!  His version seems to be an adaption of Peter, Paul & Mary; however, his refers to Christmas rather than All Saints’ Day or All Souls’ Day. “A Soul Cake, a soul cake…anything to make us merry.  We’ll hope you will be kind…And we’ll come no more a-soulin’…till Christmas time next year.”

That…”a soul cake a soul cake a soul cake…” chant makes me uneasy.  Like some sort of Satanic chant.  I think I will pause and pray right now…to be honest…all of this has made me uneasy and it is scaring the hell out of me!

“Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for your outrageous love for us.  Thank you for your Word…and your knowledge.  Lord as we explore the dark side of a holiday that drips in demonic activity I pray for Your protection and your comfort.   Oh God!  I am feeling very uneasy right now.  Like someone or something is watching me and they are not pleased with what I am writing…I rebuke these demonic spirits in the name of Jesus…you are the most high God…protect me and shower me with your love.  I pray that all those that read this are blessed and educated Lord.  That they will see the truth and they will follow your law.  Thank you Jesus.”

I’m am sorry, I had to do that…I am not simply filling words up on a page…I really am feeling scared and uneasy.

One thing that comes to mind at this point is that the Scripture firmly teaches that we are not to pray to anyone but the Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost.  Catholic doctrine teaches us to pray to the Saints.  Catholicism teaches it is okay to pray to Saints and other creatures.  I firmly believe that praying to anyone other than God is IDOLATRY.  I have no problem with Christians in Heaven hearing what is said on earth.  Many Christians seem to deny this fact, however, this is clearly taught in revelation 5:8-14.  Just because people in Heaven can hear the prayers on earth does not mean we can pray to them.  They can only hear the prayers and praises of God and this is only granted by God, let’s not give the Saints any powers that they do not have.

“The Roman Catholic Church prefers to say that it possible for the Saints in heaven hear every prayer of every creature all the time; otherwise, it would not be possible to pray to Mary legitimately.  The standard Protestant objection is that praying to the saints implies a type of omniscience on the hearers’ part. Their argument based on what we do not know, not what we do know.

There is no biblical teaching at all that states we are to pray to those who once were alive on earth and are now in heaven.  Biblically, prayer is always offered to God, and is a form of worship.  Further, prayer is not the same thing as talking to someone face-to-face.  Prayer is a humble petition to the Lord and not to a friend who’s in the same room with you or on the other end of the phone — or in heaven.  Prayer is offered to God, never to any created thing.  To do so is to offer worship that should only be directed to God, which is idolatry.”

The Bible teaches us to pray to God in Jesus name: 1 Pet 1:17, Eph 3:14.

By participating on Halloween you are breaking the very first commandment, Exodus 20:4, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

Certainly, anyone that prays to dead people is an Idolatress! REPENT — Acts 3:19!

Pumpkins & Jack-o’lanterns —

A traditional Irish turnip Jack-o’-lantern from the early 20th century.
Photographed at the Museum of Country Life, Ireland

One of the traditions for guisers or pranksters was to hollow out turnips or mangel wursels (beets or other root vegetable).   Once hollowed out they would place a candle in them to act as lanterns.  Quite often they were carved with grotesque and frightening faces to represent spirits or goblins.  They were also used to protect themselves from harmful spirits.  Interesting, an evil spirit to protect you from and evil spirit…no thank you…I think I will rely on my Holy Spirit.   They were common during Somerset or Punkie Night.  Punkie Night is an English custom practices on the last Thursday of October.

Children marched around with a jack o’lantern and sang a song which goes:

It’s Punkie Night tonight
It’s Punkie Night tonight
Adam and Eve would not believe
It’s Punkie Night tonight

There are some variants of this old rhyme which also include these lines:

“Give me a candle, give me a light If you don’t, you’ll get a fright”

or alternatively:  “Give me a candle give me light If you haven’t a candle, a penny’s all right”

As Cooper and Sullivan (Cooper, Q. & Sullivan, (1994). Maypoles, Martyrs and Mayhem. London: Bloomsbury books.) explain, this relates to the tradition where children would beg for candles on this night, and threaten people who refused to give them anything.

Morrell (Morrell, Patricia; Peter Clark (Illustrator) (1977). Festivals and Customs. London: Pan Piccolo Books) explains how, in earlier times, farmers would put a traditional “Punkie” on their gates to ward off evil spirits at this time of year.

The Jack o’lantern comes from an Irish folklore about a man Jack who tricked the devil into climbing a tree.   Once the devil was in the tree, Jack carved a cross on the trunk, preventing the devil from climbing down.  The devil made a deal with jack (he is good at that) not to allow Jack into hell after jack died and all he had to do was remove the cross from the tree.  After Jack dies, he couldn’t go to hell and he couldn’t go to Heaven.   Poor Jack was forced to wonder around the earth with a single candle to light his way.  The candle was placed in a turnip to keep it burning longer.   In the 1800s the Irish began to immigrate to America they changed from the turnip to the pumpkin.  Along with these traditions they brought with them the black cat which is considered to be reincarnated spirits who had prophetic abilities.

Halloween is an occasion when the ancient gods (actually demons) are worshiped with human sacrifice.  The origins are not of Christian origins (notice the word “Christian” in quotes at the beginning of this essay?)  …the origins of Halloween are a mixture of old Celtic pagan rituals, demon incantations, worship of the dead, superstition and early Catholic traditions.

Many have claimed the “Christian” roots of Halloween.  I guess that all depends.  It depends if you count Catholics as Christians.  Now let me be perfectly clear.  Do I think Catholics are going to Heaven? No, absolutely not.  The Catholic Church is nothing but a cult that dabbles in blatant Idolatry, Sorcery, Islamism and Saint Worship.    However, there will be Christians that attended mass that do make Heaven, but it will not be because of their religion it will be in spite of it!  It will be because of Jesus!

Snap-Apple Night, painted by Irish artist Daniel Maclise in 1833.
It was inspired by a Halloween party he attended in Blarney, Ireland, in 1832.

The caption in the first exhibit catalogue:

There Peggy was dancing with Dan
While Maureen the lead was melting,
To prove how their fortunes ran
With the Cards could Nancy dealt in;
There was Kate, and her sweet-heart Will,
In nuts their true-love burning,
And poor Norah, though smiling still
She’d missed the snap-apple turning.

On the Festival of Hallow Eve.

The most frightening thing about the Snap-Apple painting (never mind the eerie resemblance to the drink we call SNAPPLE —which I think there is more there than meets the eye.)…it looks EXACTLY like a Church sponsored HALLOWEEN ALTERNATIVE PARTY…maybe trunk r treat or Harvest Party! Games, dancing, bobbing for apples, singing, eating…candy and more.  I mistakenly took my children to our church’s trunk or treat.  First, in the church fellowship hall… it look just like the Snap-Apple painting.  They had women dressing as men, men dressing as women…witches, goblins, etc.   They were putting fake tattoos on the kids; tattoos of pumpkins, witches, black cats, goblins, ghosts, etc.   PLEASE CHURCH WAKE UP…WE ARE THE SAINTS OF GOD AND WE ARE ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL!!!!

The origins of Halloween are Celtic in tradition and have to do with observing the end of summer sacrifices to gods in Druidic tradition. In what is now Britain and France, it was the beginning of the Celtic year, and they believed Samhain, the lord of death, sent evil spirits abroad to attack humans, who could escape only by assuming disguises and looking like evil spirits themselves. The waning of the sun and the approach of dark winter made the evil spirits rejoice and play nasty tricks. Believe it or not, most of our Halloween practices can be traced back to these old pagan rites and superstitions.

Before we move on I think it is important that we have a look at how Wicca, the official religion of witchcraft, has to say about Halloween.

Perhaps they viewed the day as a simple fun and innocent neighborhood activity?

I don’t know if I should be shocked or I should have seen this coming.   Halloween is a real, sacred day for those who follow Wicca. In fact, it is one of two high and holy days for them. The Celtic belief of spirits being released is current, along with the worship of Samhain (the lord of death) – both are promoted as something to embrace on that day.   I am convinced that those who believe and practice witchcraft, that Halloween represents a tremendous opportunity to embrace the evil, devilish, dark side of the spiritual world.  If you are not convinced of this, please take a trip with me to Ashland, Oregon, just north of the California border on Halloween night.  The streets will literally be filled with Wiccan…demonic activity.

SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN

An old proverb says, “When you sup with the devil, use a long spoon.” Presumably, NO genuine Christian would want to sup with the devil at all and yet many may be doing so in ignorance.

Halloween is celebrated by millions of people as a fun time for kids, putting on costumes, and going door-to-door to get candy. But it is also known as a time of witches, ghouls, goblins, and ghosts. On one hand, some see Halloween as a harmless time of fun and on the other, a ghastly and demonically inspired night to be avoided.

As Christians, there is a lot of debate on whether or not we should participate in Halloween. Is it alright to go trick-or-treating? Can we dress our kids up in costumes on that day? If we do any of this, are we celebrating an evil holiday?

My son, Joshua is just six years old told me, “daddy all the people that think Halloween is a Christian Holiday is lying it is actually a devil holiday.”  Now how in the world did my six year old figure this out and YOU HAVEN’T?

My daughter Rosebud, my 11 year old daughter has an answer for those that believe that Halloween is a Christian Holiday, “Well that just explains it all!  Kids dressing up with blood all over them, pitchforks and tails with triangles on them (obviously her observation of a devil), ghosts and goblins and witches…I don’t even get that.  Yeah, it’s a Christian Holiday.”

To be honest, on the surface it is clear that Halloween is a satanic holiday…and should scare the bezeebers out of us forcing us to recite the Scripture, “greater is He that is within me than He that is in the world.”  Let alone the history which we have just uncovered…if you really are a Christian as you claim to be…you should have a very uneasy feeling in your spirit…you should be scared as hell.

A few points about Hallowen:

  • October 31st has long been known as “The Festival of the Dead.” The Celtic tribes and their priests the Druids celebrated this day as a marker for the change from life to death.
  • Witches celebrate Halloween as the “Feast of Samhain,” the first feast of the witchcraft year. Being a festival of the dead, Halloween is a time when witches attempt to communicate with the dead through various forms of divination.  Christians should not be involved with occultic practice or divination. Note God’s command against divination in Deuteronomy 18.
  • Villagers, fearful of the possibility of being visited by the ghosts of past occupants, would dress up in costumes to scare the spirits on their way. They would also leave food and other treats at their door to appease the spirits so they would not destroy their homes or crops but instead move on down the road. Occultists also would try to scare away the spirits by carving a scary face into a pumpkin.
  • In some witchcraft covens, the closing ritual includes eating an apple or engaging in fertility rites. In the Bible (Genesis 3), eating a piece of fruit brought sin and death into the world. In witchcraft, eating an apple is symbolic of bringing life. The practice of bobbing for apples brings together two pagan traditions: divination and the fertility ritual.
  • Schools are removing any religious significance from Christmas (often called winter break) and Easter (spring break). Isn’t it ironic that most public schools still celebrate Halloween even though it has occultic origins?
  • Participating in Halloween gives sanction to a holiday that promotes witches, divination, haunted houses, and other occultic practices.

Source: These bullet points were barrowed from Probe Ministries in Richardson, Texas. (http://www.fillthevoid.org/Occult/TenReasonsChristiansShouldNotCelebrateHalloween.htm)

Some of you are not interested in what the Bible commands, however, you have stuck with me thus far, we know with certainty that we as Christians, as Saints of God, as Ambassadors of Christ that we are forbidden to become involved with the works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

As a minister of the Gospel and being saved for over 25 years I have seen the devastating effect on lives when this commandment is broken.  Remember, God’s promise of protection for ourselves and that of our children is for those that are in His will and that promise may no longer hold true if we allow our children to celebrate this dark religious holiday.  Rebellion is the same as witchcraft the Bible tells us.  Ever wonder why children raised in an environment where Halloween is celebrated are in rebellion!  It is difficult enough to raise our children in a Godly manner in this day than to purposely expose them to Satan and the realm of darkness.

Satan and his demons have created a maze of ‘alternate religions’ to keep as many people deceived and confused as possible.  A brief study of history will show that Satan as introduced one false belief system after another.  He knows that our love for God and our God given desire to serve Him can easily be short circuited by these false religions.  He has told one lie after another: “all roads lead to God”.  Some uneducated Christians or Christians who refuse to hear the truth believe this lie.  All roads do not lead to God.  There is one God, the Creator of all.  Jesus is the ONLY Road to God and without Jesus Christ, there is no salvation.

It is clear, and all Christians need to know this, the devil wants to deceive us and keep us from discovering the truth.  Can we agree on that much today?  I am writing this for Christians, my brothers and my sisters.  The Church and Christians make one compromise after another.  Where in God’s Word and it is just a question, where does it say we must compromise with the world and become tolerant of other religions and sin?  Show me and I will never again preach the Gospel.  If that is so, then I am wrong…wrong about everything I know to be true of God.

You might say, Brother Kevin…my kids dress up as Barbie, Mickey Mouse or Pirates.  I always go with them, so that they are safe.  We never carve scary faces on pumpkins.  We have so much fun decorating our yard as a cemetery.  First, let me ask you mom, dad…what happens when you take your children tout Guising in their Barbie Costume and their Pirate Costume (arrggg!!!) and they see other children dressed as demons, ghosts, hookers, witches and an assortment of other occultic creatures?   What do you say to them?  WAIT!  Don’t answer me too quick.  Think…think…I know it hurts…but think!  You are building a foundation with your children and right now you have a moment.  What will you say?  What can you possible say that will not mold them and how they think about the occult?

If you say, “It’s okay Sarah; it’s all fun…just fun.”  You have just taught your child that it is OK to emulate evil and THAT IS WHAT THEY WILL REMEMBER.  1 Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Abstain from the APPEARANCE of EVIL.”  How about this one mom, “Oh honey, just ignore them…they are not Christians and they do not know any better.”  Congratulations mom, you have now just taught your child to not care about the lost and the dying…the ones that need Jesus.  Great parenting.  “Who is this guy, talking to us like this…it’s none of his business and he needs to use some tact.”    Who am I?  I am a dad; a grandfather, a husband, a Pastor…and I love you enough to tell you the hard truth…tact?  If you have not been watching the news, Jesus could return any minute!  Do you know how many people died from cancer last year alone?  We don’t have time…we need to share the truth in love and sometimes the truth hurts.

And speaking of truth, there is no response that you could share with your children that would erase the representation of evil and the occult on Halloween…you will dull their ability to determine what is evil and dark and what is pure and light.

One that I have been hearing a lot and reading on Facebook lately…I even saw a Youth Pastor’s wife say, “It’s all for fun.”  Your children will come to accept that they can enjoy Halloween that it is all in fun.  Maybe they have dressed up as a witch or a demon…hey it’s all in fun.  How about let them read Goosebumps or how about your read them the latest Stephen King novel before bed…it’s all in fun.  Maybe your son comes home one day and announces he talked to his grandmother who passed away 6 months ago.  His buddy whipped out a Ouija board and grandma was right there…it’s all in fun.  Maybe your daughter comes home late from school…her beautiful blonde hair is died black…nails are black…lipstick is black.  She announces that she is a Wiccan and she is in touch with mother earth on a truly spiritual level…groovy man…hey, it’s all in fun.  Maybe one night you get a call from the local police…your son or daughter is in jail.   The police had arrested them because of occultic activity…murder…desecrating a body…child endangerment…OH MY WHAT DID THEY DO?  The skinned a 6 month old baby alive as a sacrifice to the druid god Aba Kulana (I made that name up)…hey it’s all in fun. Your children have heard you say all their life that evil doesn’t hurt anything…it’s all in fun…as long as you don’t mean it to be serious…

Now, you are thinking that I am going too far.  But every single example I have given is a true one.  Listen to me mom and dad!  When we do not give our children FIRM direction in these areas, the devil will have free access, access that you have allowed and it will confuse and mislead your children.  Our children are not saved because we are.  They must choose Jesus for themselves.  If we do not tell that that the supernatural realm doesn’t have to be taken seriously, then they will not take it seriously and they will not take JESUS serious!

My children will not celebrate or participate in Halloween because:

– I don’t want them to underestimate the devil

– I don’t want them to open up to demonic influence

– I don’t want them to stumble into an area of the occult unaware

– I want them to know that I take the Bible literally

– I want them to prefer the light of the Gospel to the darkness of the occult

– I want them to know that it is OK to stand apart from the world on these issues

– I want them to recognize easily what is evil and stand against it in the name of Jesus

I could list many other reasons, but would you listen?  My children do not go to Harvest Parties or trunk or treats, etc.  THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHURCH SPONSORED HARVEST PARTY AND SAMHAIN!

When my children were in public school, we sent a note to school that said, “Dear teacher, we are Christians and do not participate in any fashion with the pagan holiday of Halloween.  As Christians, it is not appropriate for our children.  Please provide an alternate activity for my child if you plan to have parties, carve or color pumpkins or other occultic creatures.

Thank you for your understanding.  If you have questions, please call me.  God bless you, Mr. Airrington.  555-555-1212.”

If I have not convinced you that participating in Halloween in ANY FORM is wrong for a Christian, then you really have not prayed or thought about it.  If you choose this day whom you will serve and ask God to help you and give you wisdom in this area, He will.

What should Christians do?  Many believe they need to have a Harvest Party or the like so that their children are not missing out on the “fun” the others are having.  Remember what I said, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHURCH SPONSORED HARVEST PARTY AND SAMHAIN!

My children have NEVER been trick or treating and they don’t miss it!  They don’t care.  Often times the holiday becomes part of the parent and the fun the parent has seeing Johnny dressed up like a cute little demon.  If you feel you need an alternative I will give you one…probably the only one.

Remember, when Jesus spoke with Peter about His church, he promised him that, “…the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”  Matthew 16:18 This is a very clear mandate from our King…we are to take hell by violence!  Some Christians believe we need to take a defensive posture and hide in a corner protected by our shield of faith…no way…Jesus is talking of about offensive action here.  We need to seize the day and attack Satan’s Kingdom.

This is what we do at the Airrington house:  Those little demons and Barbie’s are coming…you can turn off your porch lite…pray you are not the attack of a prankster…hide in the corner with your shield or you can take hell by violence!

Get a small zip lock baggy…put a few pieces of candy in it.  Maybe a pencil with a Bible Scripture, some Bible Stickers (kids love stickers) and go to www.chick.org and order some comic tracts.  You can search for Halloween or get any of them… My Favorite is, “Who’s your Daddy?” They are cheap…just 16¢ each.  Buy 1 or 100!   On the back there is room to write your church or stamp it in…or your website or anything…a message…or leave it blank.  Zip it all up in the baggy…any extra candy let your kids eat it or hide it and you eat it!

Then pour yourself a hot bowl of Chili…shred some Cheddar Cheese and onion it…butter up the corn bread and wait for the doorbell.  Go to the door for safety with your kids…but let them hand out the bags.  They will be excited they are spreading God’s Word.

The Bible says “my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” That is so true! We do need to know what the Word says. It is relevant to our present lives, not just our eternal! Many of us have wasted a lot of years and we are just finding out what God has to say about our lives.

My family does not celebrate Halloween.  We don’t even pretend that it’s good, or make believe that somehow it’s a Christian event.  Halloween has roots in witchcraft, the occult and human sacrifice plain and simple.   It is the devils attempt to get some glory.  I’m always saddened this time of year when I see the number of Christians and churches that dress Halloween up like a baby in a pumpkin suit and follow the world.  If it’s just for dress-up and candy, we can do that any day of the year.  As believers anything we see the masses flocking to, we should be very leery of.  In public schools for example Halloween is celebrated and lifted up, yet Jesus is not allowed.   Like any family decision I encourage you to seek the Lord.

Ask yourself these questions for any choice you’re facing:

  • Does this activity lift up the Name of Jesus?
  • Would I do this activity with Jesus standing next to me?
  • Is this activity training my children in the way they should go?

You do not need an ‘alternative’ or substitute.   Changing the name to Harvest Festival does not change what it is.  Remember, we are in a war.  Will you fight or shall we just make up alternatives to the worlds wickedness?

Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT HALLOWEEN

What does the Bible say about Halloween?  Everything!  You will not find the word Halloween or any of its previous names.  But the Bible is very loud concerning the occult, witches and demons.

Here are a few scriptures…if you have made it this far please don’t fade away at the most important part…God’s Word.

Exodus 22:18, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.”

Deuteronomy 18:10-14, ” 9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer [communicating or praying to the dead].

12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

13 Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.

14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.”

1 Corinthians 10:20-21 “20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.”

Galatians 4:8-11 “8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.”

Romans 13:12a “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.”

God is definitely speaking negatively about occultic practices, spirits, witches and He condemns not only the practice but the people who chose to involve themselves in it.   King Saul found out and you and I have discovered this to be true, as Christians we are to have NOTHING to do with the occult.  Tarot Cards, praying to the dead (Idolatry), séances, lucky charms, talismans, demons, witches, mediums, etc.   These are all unbiblical and will harm our fellowship God.  They will open the Christian up to demonic oppression.  If you are having difficulty in your life…right now…this very second, reach in your pocket…what’s in your pocket?  What’s hanging around your neck?  A rabbit’s foot, a crucifix, St Christopher, a pentagram…get rid of it now and see if your circumstances don’t change.

Sadly, most Christians have heard this, read it in their Bible and ignore it.  One time I was talking with a Christian couple and I brought up this very subject.  Suddenly the man reached in his pocket and pulled a talisman…it was of one of the Catholic Patriarch Saints, I cannot remember which.   Everyone in the room starred at it…I finally broke the silence and said, “Where did you get that?”  He didn’t answer…he looked slowly in his wife’s direction.  His wife said almost very proudly, “I bought it for him.”  I said, “O, what did you do that for?”  She said, “I bought it for him when he had his heart surgery.”  I said, “what for?”  She said slowly as it began to dawn on her….”I ….I thought…it…would protect him!”  They told me that he had experienced one health problem after another since he started carrying that talisman.  I said, “Get rid of it.”  They said they would…but I have a feeling he still has it…he continues to have health issues.  Some unexplained by doctors.

THE FINAL WORD

The word “holiday” means “holy day.” But there is nothing holy about Halloween. The root word of Halloween is “hallow,” which means “holy, consecrated and set apart for service.” If this holiday is hallowed, whose service is it set apart for? The answer to that question is very easy-Lucifer’s!

As Christians you and I are placed in this world to be a light in a world of darkness. There is no lasting benefit to ignore a holiday that exists around us, but it also does harm to celebrate Halloween as it has originated and grown over the centuries.

When Did God Create the Angels?

When Did God Create the Angels?

My purpose for writing this is not to simply present another theory.  I will say this many times throughout this article; Satan’s purpose is to get us to doubt God’s Word (Genesis 3:1).  My purpose for writing this is to CHANGE YOUR MIND.  I don’t want you to doubt God’s Word.

For years I have made it a project of mine to study; creation, evolution, and dinosaurs.  The subject is fascinating and the subject of creation is the very foundations of our faith.  The enemy keeps pounding away at our foundation and we say, “It’s okay, he didn’t the church.”  Soon, the church starts to become wobbly…until it crashes.  I have read everything and watched everything I can get my hands on.  I have written articles and books on the subject.  I believe that Genesis 1 is literally true, as is the rest of the Bible, the King James Bible.

I believe that God created everything in six 24-literal days.  The King James Bible is VERY CLEAR on this.  There can absolutely be no mistake about this.  Whether you believe what it says is the only question.  Let me show you:

GENESIS CHAPTER ONE

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

In Genesis Chapter one we see the phrase, “And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” There can be no mistake.  “The evening and the morning”…this can be no other but a 24 hour day  Now, I understand the word day can mean different things.  For example:

“Back in my father’s day, he traveled during the day for a day.  There are three different uses of the same word, “day”, however, just as in the First Chapter of Genesis, we know the meaning by context.  What about the Hebrew?  Again, the Hebrew word for the word day is “yom”, can mean more than one thing.

It can refer to the 24-hour period of time that it takes for the earth to rotate on its axis (e.g., “there are 24 hours in a day”). It can refer to the period of daylight between dawn and dusk (e.g., “it gets pretty hot during the day but it cools down a bit at night”). And it can refer to an unspecified period of time (e.g., “back in my father’s day . . .”). It is used to refer to a 24-hour period in Genesis 7:11. It is used to refer to the period of daylight between dawn and dusk in Genesis 1:16. And it is used to refer to an unspecified period of time in Genesis 2:4.  So, what does yom mean in Genesis 1:5–2:2 when used in conjunction with ordinal numbers (i.e., the first day, the second day, the third day, the fourth day, the fifth day, the sixth day, and the seventh day)? Are these 24-hour periods or something else?  Could yom as it is used here mean an unspecified period of time?

Jesus and the apostles quoted from Genesis, arguably more than any other book of the Bible.  I believe that the evidence clearly shows that dinosaurs did not live millions of years ago, but they have lived on this earth for only about 6,000.  I believe that dinosaurs have always lived with man.  I believe that evolution is not even a theory, it is a fairytale. I believe that to deny the creation in Genesis 1 is to question the very credibility of Jesus and the Apostles.

Some will read this article and disagree with me on the time when God created the angels.  Of course, some of you may disagree with me on everything. J   You and I can disagree, as long as you and I agree with what God’s Word says.  I know many Christians that will simply hold that angels were created the first week or “early” first week”.  However, I believe that scripture can be more precise and show us an exact day during the creation week when God created the angels.  To be honest, as long as you are at least putting angels the first week and even after reading this article…and reading the Scriptures that I will share you still disagree…then I am ok.  And you should be too.  We have bigger fish to fry…souls that are lost…we do not need two mature Christians arguing about a day or two.

However, if you are from the camp that claims that God created angels before the first week, then we have a problem.  I dare say that if you are in this camp that you are stepping into heretical territory. Come back on this side of the line, the truth is over here.  In fact, since I am making bold statements, I will make one more.  If your position is that God made the angels before Genesis 1:1 then you sir/madam are in fact calling my God a liar!

If the hair just stood up on the back of your neck, GOOD, then I have your attention.  “I would never call God a liar!” you bark back at me.  Of course, you would not.  But I believe that inadvertently that is what some of you may be doing.  What I am about to teach you may contradict what you may have already learned and believed the truth to be.  A few assumptions if I may.  Both of us cannot be right.  One of us has to be wrong.  Both of us could be wrong.  So what do you do if what I am about to teach contradicts what you may have already learned?  First, keep in mind that this is not what I would refer to as a “Salvation Issue”.  The virgin birth, the resurrection, the deity of Christ and the creation account in Genesis all are examples of what I would call, “Salvation Issues”.

If you are questioning if God created angels in the first place or if God created them sometime other than the creation week in Genesis 1, then we need to have a different discussion.  As far as this discussion is concerned, and this may be dangerous but I will assume that you will agree that angels were created and that they were created during the first week.  The only thing left to settle is on what day during the first week was the angels settled?   Let’s look at the creation account in Genesis 1 to see if we can find the answer?

Verses 1-5 — FIRST DAY

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. {this will become important later}

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day”.

“In the beginning…”  We have what we call a definite article here.  Meaning there was a beginning.  This is important.  The other thing I want to point out is who did the creating.  Genesis 1 says, God.   Now, we know and understand from further study of Scripture that God is actually three persons in one: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  The Son submits to the Father and the Holy Spirit submits to the Son.  John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:16, etc. all proclaim Jesus Christ as the Creator, not the Father and not the Holy Spirit.  This is important…Jesus is not a created being…He is the Creator.

On day one of the creation Verses 1-5 we see the Creator, Jesus Christ, creating heaven (not heavens as incorrectly translated in some versions, see my article on the three heavens) and earth.  The heaven, in this case, refers to outer space, everything beyond earth.  It also says that the Spirit of God moved upon the waters.  Then the Creator created light and darkness.   We see no evidence of angels being created on day one as recorded in the first five verses alone.  But pay close attention…

Verses 6-8 — SECOND DAY

6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”

God creates the sky.  The sky forms a barrier between water upon the surface and the moisture in the air.  At this point, earth would have an atmosphere.  Some talk about a layer of ice or water called a canopy around the earth that shields the earth from UV light.  This canopy came down at the time of the flight.    Read carefully, were there angels created on the second day?

Verses 9-13 — THIRD DAY

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13And the evening and the morning were the third day.

God creates dry land. Continents and islands are above the water. The large bodies of water are named “seas” and the ground is named “land.”  The Creator creates dry land, the seas, and vegetation. God declares that all this is good.  We do not see any direct clear evidence of the creation of angels on day three of the creation week…pay close careful attention,  I am about to trick…play VERY close attention.

Verses 14-19 — FOURTH DAY

“ 14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. “

On the fourth day, God made the sun, the moon, the stars and the planets.  Complete with an established orbit so as to mark the passage of time (months, seasons, and years).

Verses 20-23 — FIFTH DAY

20”And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23And the evening and the morning were the fifth day”.

On the fifth day, the Creator created the living creatures of the water and of the air (The birds and the fish).

Verses 24-31 — SIXTH DAY

24”And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day”.

On the sixth day of creation, land animals, dinosaurs and man were created. At this time there was no death on the Earth, and God proclaimed it was good.  Up to this point at least in the Genesis account, we do not see, angels being created.  If it were that simple there would be no need for me to write this document.  When we look at God’s Word as a whole it becomes very clear that angels were created on day two of the creation week.  It was not a complete waste of time spelling out Genesis chapter one…it helped us to sort out exactly what was created on each day.  This will be important later on in this article and many of you had no idea as to the order.  And just because the order can get lost in a bunch of words I am going to outline it for us here:

The First Day The heaven, the earth, light and darkness.
The Second Day The atmosphere, (a canopy of water or ice)
The Third Day The land and plants
The Fourth Day The sun, the moon and the planets
The Fifth Day The birds and the fish.
The Six Day The Land animals, dinosaurs and man,

Remember that the issue of this discussion is not if He created them but when He created the angels.  If Satan can get you to doubt what God says then he has you!  The truth is God created angels and the truth is He created them early first week or creation and the truth is He created them on the second day.

Alright, we need to jump over to second Peter chapter three.  It is important for us to understand that Satan has been twisting the Word of God since the Garden of Eden.  Genesis 3:1 Satan says to Eve, Yea hath God said.  Right off the bat, we see Satan twisting God’s Word.  He is a professional; he knows every trick because he has been at this game for the last 6,000 years.  And if Satan can get us to doubt God’s Word then his job is finished.  Some have asserted, and to be honest, I have heard this argument before, that 2 Peter 3 shows that we are standing on the second earth. Their theory claims that the Millennium is actually the third coming.  Say what?  We used to say in Junior High, “brotha please!”   Ok, before we get too far ahead of ourselves and all the bad 80’s terminology starts coming out… let’s open our Bibles to 2nd Peter chapter 3 and get into the meat of this thing.

Verse 2 — “That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior:”

Verse 3 — “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,”

Verse 4 — “And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? {Doubting God’s Word} for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation{there God goes ago again, claiming there was a beginning}.

Verse5 — “For this they willingly are ignorant {In the Greek this means dumb on purpose :)} of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:”

Verse 6 — “Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:” (ahhh, interesting!  Here we have a clue.  Write this down.)

Verse 7 — But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”

Verse 10 — “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which, the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” {sound like the big bang?}

The BIG BANG is going to happen…it just has not happened yet.

Verse 13 — “Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

Why would God send His son to die for a world that has already been destroyed?  In other words, is it enough for Jesus to die for one world or does He need to die for multiple earths?  I am not asking you to make a stretch or leap of faith here.  However, I am asking you to THINK!  Put to work that 4-pound organ between your ears that God designed.  2 Peter 3 is clearly speaking about future events; events that can be lined up with the book of Revelation. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night”2 Peter 3:10.

Paul also makes mention of this in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”  When is the day of the Lord?  When will He come as a thief in the night?   At the second coming…a future event that has been prophesied in the Old Testament and the New Testament.  The second coming of Christ is an event that we as Christians long for.  This event is referred to as the RAPTURE 2 Peter 3:9 —The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  If 2 Peter 3 was talking about the past, why would God be concerned that none would perish and that all would come to repentance?  2 Peter is referring to the future and is supported by Revelation 21:1, And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Unknowingly, some Christians that teach that there was an earth before this one are teaching part of the Gap Theory.  Now, when you mention that they say, “no way”…look at the Gap Theory and you will see.  Basically, the Gap Theory claims there are millions of years between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2.

We are still standing on the first earth.  Revelation 21:1 says, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”  Is there still a sea?  Yes.  This is an event that is yet to happen.  John Hagee preaches a sermon that states the first earth was destroyed when Satan fell.  This is not scriptural.  It preaches real good and he has nice graphics and all, but he is dead wrong! John Hagee is a heretic.

So when did Satan fall?  The answer can be found in Ezekiel 28:12-15,

Verse 12Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. {Satan was smart and beautiful}

Verse 13 — Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Verse 14 — “Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Verse 15 — “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

We can learn a lot from this scripture:

  • Satan was in Eden
  • Satan was Created
  • He was perfect until sin was found in him
  • He was in Eden until he sinned

Genesis 1:31, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”

After the sixth day God had a look around at everything He had created.  He said, “yep, everything is very good.”

Satan could not have fallen before the sixth day.  God would not have said everything was, “very good” if Satan was running around being a bad guy.  He was probably a nice guy in Eden for a long time.  Another argument, but from my studies, this was probably about 100 years.  Can you imagine God saying everything was very good and the lion ripping guts out of the zebra or Satan running around doing what he does today or any of the terrible things we see today?  I think not.

The scriptures tell us that angels were created.  Psalm 148:2-5, etc.  This would include Satan.  In order to understand when angels were created, it is important to understand why angels were created.  Now, I understand we read about angels worshipping and praising God, but was that why they were created? (Revelation 5:11-14) According to Scripture angels were NOT created to worship and praise God, I understand that is something angels do…but that is not why they were created.  Yes, I did repeat myself.  Not because I have a speech impediment, but because for some reason people will come back to this point over and over again.   We need to be clear, angels do things…they sing they fly, they are messengers, etc., but these are not WHY they were created.

Hebrews 1:14, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Hebrews 1:14 clearly says that angels are ministering spirits created to minister to manGenesis 28:12, Psalm 104:4, Matthew 4:11, Mark 1:13, Hebrews 1:7 could all be used to show that angels were created to minister to man.  Question?  If God created angels to minister to man, and He did (see Scripture); why would He need to create them millions of years before man got here?  I asked this question to a Pastor who was speaking on the topic of creation.  Of course I was fascinated by every word he spoke.  I loved his animation and the detail of his presentation.  When I question him about his theory that angels were created before Genesis 1:1 using the fact that angels were created to minister to man he responded this way:

“Did God create plants on the 3rd day and plants were for man to eat and God created plants before man needed them?”  God created everything before man I said.  And we are talking 3 days not millions of years.  If that is what he believes he is welcome to, but I believe the scriptures show otherwise.  I then went into my explanation of why angels were created on day two, what you are reading here.  His senior Pastor was standing within earshot of our conversation.  He walked over and said, “I have to go with Airrington on this.”  It’s not hard when you are right.  Hold on, I am not being arrogant…I have been wrong plenty of times.  Let’s continue…before I get myself into trouble…

Looking now back to Genesis 1:1 and then we will wrap this up with the final blow to the theory that angels were created before Genesis 1:1.  “Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven {no s, another argument for another day} and the earth.”  I would like to point out your Honor that God through Moses said that there was a beginning.  It is true that according to Psalm 90:4, the same man that wrote Genesis 1:1, said that God was outside of time and then Peter quoted Moses in 2 Peter 3:8.  So, once upon a time, there was no time.  I would also like to point out your Honor that the Bible was written for man’s benefit not for God’s benefit.  If God said there was a BEGINNING and Moses believed Him and wrote it down…then I believe Him too.  Why would God tell us that there was a beginning if this was really not the beginning?  Remember Genesis 3:1, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”  Satan has been trying to confuse us and make us doubt God’s Word for the last 6,000 years.  If God says, “In the beginning…” we have no reason to doubt God except Satan trying and make us doubt what God said.  You know there is another name for this theory it is called the pre-adamite period.  Look that one up.

Job 38:4&7 tells us that the angels including Satan shouted for joy when God laid the foundations of the earth.  Genesis 1:2, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”  In Genesis 1:2 The earth was empty and nothing was here.  The earth was a ball of water.  The foundations were laid on the second day.  Genesis 1:3, “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.”  On the third day, the foundations of the earth were formed.   Kevin, how can you be sure of this?

Psalm 104:1-5, “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.”

There are three significant things that I would like to point out from Psalm 104:1-5 (in the first two verses the psalmist is praising God):

  1. God creates the waters
  2. God makes the angels
  3. God laid the foundations of the earth

Notice the order of things in Psalm 104Job 38 says that the angels (including Satan) witnessed the laying of the foundations of the earth.  Genesis, Job, Psalm all point to angels being made prior to the laying of the foundations of the earth.  Psalm gives us the order of events and amplifies Genesis, the first 3 days of creation and again it says that angels were created as ministers.

Summary – Statements of Fact

  • God’s Spirit moves across the face of the water(Genesis 1:2)
    • “Who Layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters” (Psalm 104:3)
    • Angels were Created (Hebrews 1:14, Psalm 104:4)
    • Angels were Created to minister to man  (Hebrews 1:14, Psalm 104:4)
    • Angels witnessed the laying of the foundation of the earth(Job 38:7, Angels shouted for joy when the foundations of the earth were laid)
      • “Who laid the foundations of the earth…?” (Psalm 104:5)
      • Genesis, Job & Psalm all point to Angels being made prior to the laying of the foundations of the earth.
      • Exodus 20:11 God tells us that He created EVERYTHING in six days.

If this is not enough, I wonder what God Himself said?  For that, I will take you to the 20th chapter of Exodus where the 10 commandments are recorded.  Exodus 20:1, “And God spake all these words, saying,” Okay boys and girls…what you are about to hear next GOD SAID!  That’s right!  All 1189 chapters of the King James Bible were inspired only this one chapter was actually written by the finger of God (Exodus 20).  Exodus 20:11, “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.”  God said that He created the heaven, the earth and the sea and ALL THAT IN THEM IS…in six days.  Including…angels.  The question you should not be asking is, “Did He say it?”  The question is do you believe He said it? By my count, God asked Job 84 rhetorical questions.  One of those questions can be found in Job 38:4:

“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?”

None of us were there when God laid the foundations of the earth.  Moses was not there when God laid the foundations of the earth (Day 3), but Moses believed God.  All we have is God’s Word and if we cannot take God’s Word when angels were created then we can’t take His Word when it comes to anything else.

At this point there should be little doubt in your mind that God created angels early in the week; probably the second day according to Job 38 and Psalm 104.  If we begin to doubt what God said, this is exactly what Satan wants us to do (Genesis 3:1).  If we doubt God’s Word on something as simple as when the angels were created…then what else will we doubt?
