THE ART OF SOUL WINNING
By: Rev. Kevin Airrington
Here are some questions for Christian believers:
- How many have become saved through your influence ever since you became a believer?
- How many have become strong in their faith and grown in the knowledge of God through your influence?
- Do you think that Soul Winning is an important part of Christian Living?
Be sincere in your answers. If it is none, then your Christian testimony so far has been empty and barren; you may lack spiritual wisdom.
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” (Proverbs 11:30).
He that wins SOULS is wise.
Soul-winning is a product of spiritual wisdom. You can’t win souls for God if you are not WISE. If you are not winning souls to God, you lack spiritual wisdom.
“ And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2).
“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.” (Daniel 12:3).
Those who are wise – who lead many to righteousness – shall shine like the brightness of the heavens, like stars forever and ever.
What this means is that eternal greatness and stardom – the only ones that really matter -are solely reserved for those who win souls to God in this lifetime. As a matter of fact, no one can be a star in God’s Kingdom apart from winning souls.
Besides, nothing creates as much joy in heaven as the salvation of one single soul!
“I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.” (Luke 15:7).
Let’s stop right here…before we go any further I want to show you how EASY it is to “get saved”. There is no “Sinner’s prayer” in the Bible. However, the mandate is there…and it is easy for you to remember…ready?
Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
What must we confess:
BELIEVE — John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
EVERLASTING life…if your Bible says, “eternal” it’s wrong. scratch it out and write “EVERLASTING”. There is only One who is Eternal and His Name is JESUS!
REPENT — Acts 3:19, “ Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”
INVITE — Revelation 3:20, “ Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.“, saith Jesus
Confess with your mouth: Believe, Repent and Invite. That’s it. Do you think you can teach that to someone else?
Jesus gave us a job!
The level of unfruitfulness in the Church today is appalling. Statistically we do not win anyone to Christ anymore. As a young disciple, I got into my share of trouble. Daily rebuking by my Pastor began to be the norm. One day, the rebuke came strong and hard. I kept asking God, “Why? Why God? Pastor don’t like me does he? 🙂 The answer came by way of…are you ready for this? My Pastor’s wife. She said, “Kevin, our church is filled because of you!”
I will never forget that word of encouragement. I do not tell you this to brag. Only to say, “What in Heaven’s name are you doing to win the lost?”
Make no mistake, there is a war going on. This world is sick and this world is twisted and perverted. This world is dying. Choose a side.
And in the midst of all the decadence and spiritual bankruptcy of our world today, its pathetic to see so-called Christians caught up in silliness and worldliness.
For God’s sake, Jesus gave us a job!
“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:20).
And He will hold His followers – you, and I – accountable for the execution of this assignment of converting souls unto Him.
We must influence our world and turn men to God. We must win souls to God and lead many to righteousness.
5 Keys to effective soul-winning
Interested? Over the last 25 plus years I am determined that there are five keys that will enhance your soul-winning efforts and enable you to become successful in leading many to righteousness.
#1. You must strengthen your own personal relationship with God.
The time you spend alone with God is important; so also is the time you spend meditating on God’s word. See my book: “Get on your knees and fight like a man. If you do not have a copy, contact me. The digital copy is free for your donation of any amount.
Know who are you in the Lord.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” (Matthew 5:14).
Know your rights and privileges in the Lord. What a wonderful charge by our Lord…we are the LIGHT OF THE WORD.
#2. You must be different from the world.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2).
This world has its own twisted, warped, distorted, and perverted pattern of values and priorities. We must have no part of it. An old Christian rock band of the 1980’s, DC Talk said this on one of their Cassettes (yeah, cassette, I said that. :)) ” What an unbelieving world finds unbelievable is when Christians praise God on Sunday morning with their lips and then walk out the door and deny Him by their actions the rest of the week.”
At the end of the day, we have our testimony. As a young disciple, we had a way of keeping each other in check. If one of us was acting like a fool, we would softly say, “testimony!” This was just a little nudge to say, “Hey blockhead! You are messing up man and everybody is watching!!!”
Sadly, the most quoted verse of the Bible is also the most misquoted most taken out of context verse in the entire Bible. That verse is:
Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Trust me…Jesus is NOT giving us a lesson on not judging…read the entire chapter, it’s a lesson on HOW TO JUDGE. Judging must always be done in the spirit of Galatians 6:1 — with love and meekness. Judging should only be done with the purpose of restoration…knowing full well who the FINAL JUDGE is and we will be judge by the same measure that we measure others. For more details if you dare, read my essay: JUDGING AMY.
We must stand out and be peculiar.
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an HOLY nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;” (1 Peter 2:9).
O yes, peculiar people!
Some folks are so scared of standing out, and of being labeled as ‘weirdo’s’ and ‘Jesus freaks’, that they are now paralyzed and utterly useless to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.
Dare to stand out for Jesus Christ.
Dare to be different from this messed up world.
“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I [Jesus] will receive you.“. (2 Corinthians 6:17).
Quit trying to fit in and be accepted by the world; it’s not worth the effort. You are the called out…or at least you are supposed to be.
I dare you too:
Come out! Be separate! Be different!
We are in this world, but we are not of this world.
“If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” (John 15:19).
We must understand that and maintain that distinction. Listen, if the world does not hate you…then maybe you are still of the world.
We just shouldn’t share the values and priorities of this wicked and corrupt world.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15).
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16).
“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” (1 John 2:17).
#3. Be personally successful.
“Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” (1 Timothy 4:14-15).
People want proof; without proof your testimony is useless.
Your life should be the evidence that it pays to serve God.
If you were accused of being a Christian would there be enough evidence to bring a conviction?
We should be the evidence that God is mighty.
You can’t be sick, poor, broke, busted, and disgusted and expect anyone to be attracted to your ‘Jesus’.
You can’t be an unproductive and pathetic lay about and expect sensible people to be attracted to your ‘Jesus’.
The laziness, unproductivity, and lack of any color in the lives of today’s so-called Christians are sending this world to hell.
The manifestations of God in your personal life – your personal success – are your primary weapons for soul-winning.
IS GOD MANIFESTING IN YOUR LIFE? As my old Pastor use to say, “It’s just a question.”
In order to become an effective soul-winner, you must put your gifts, talents, and resources to use and create positive and attractive results.
4. Be relevant.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).
Out of all the keys this is probably the least significant. Important…just mot as important. I would recommend…just be. Be a good example, be in prayer, be in your Word, be about the Lord’s business, be available, be sweet and kind, be the light of this world, be successful, be strengthened by your faith. On last of 12 albums of a small rock band from England in 1970 sang, “Let it be.” The Beatles reminded us, “Whisper words of wisdom, let it be”.
Wisdom comes from God: Proverbs 2:6, “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
Who you are in God, and your gains in Him, should be employed to solve the problems of others. Read that again!
Your gifts and talents should be developed and deployed in the marketplaces of the earth to solve the problems of the world.
Only those who solve the problems of others can become effective soul-winners.
The fact that you are reading this essay shows that you are interested in becoming a soul winner or at LEAST IMPROVING YOUR SOUL WINNING SKILLS.
5. Boldly speak to others about Jesus and their need to get saved.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;” (2 Timothy 1:7-8).
A lot of Christians today operate like terrified chickens, too scared and timid to talk about Jesus and stand for their values. Many do not understand the act of love found in Matthew 7 and are too afraid of being called out “Don’t judge me.” Thank God for Christians who exercise the POWER and LOVE an we have the SOUND MIND to whisper and SHOUT if necessary. “testimony!”
Many Christians prefer to be quiet about their faith.
That is so wrong. In fact, devastatingly wrong. How can you call yourself a Christian if you never open your mouth?
Be bold and vocal about it.
Tell someone about the goodness and greatness of your God in your life.
Share your beliefs and values in the LORD.
Talk about what Jesus Christ did on the cross of Calvary and its necessity for salvation and deliverance from sin’s power and its consequences.
Boldly challenge and invite others to surrender their lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
CONFESS WITH THY MOUTH , Romans 10:9
Now, get on with God’s number one job on earth today – the job of saving souls!
